REDEEM CAP
So, where did the Redeem Cap come from?
Before we start talking about this piece that has become the brand's flagship item, let's find out how this material, which since 2019 has been a huge favourite in the streetwear scene in Brazil.
Crochet arrived in Brazil through trade routes and ended up becoming popular within the tribes.
In the 1940s and 1950s, the material was introduced into manual arts classes in Brazilian schools, where mostly women learned the technique. As times went by, this manual art was passed from generation to generation.
For a long time, bombetas were frowned upon and criminalised. As they are widely used in funk MC's shows and clips, consequently, as the genre grew and gained recognition, more young people from the periphery (generation Y and Z) joined the following and learned the technique, some learned it from their parents or grandparents and others through the Internet. Re-signifying craftsmanship, adding new designs, expanding the product and making it a source of income for many artisans in the hood. Today crochet caps are considered by many an item of luxury.
The Redeem brand greatly appreciates and admires the manufacturers of this craft. As it originated within Brazilian prisons and has become an accessory that represents part of the history of the peripheral population of São Paulo, we chose to work with boys and girls belonging to the culture. So that our customers receive a real product. Thus, making us the first brand to bring the crochet cap to Europe, supporting and expanding the appreciation and recognition of this unique fashion item.
